Timios Stavros Monastery & Omodos Square

A historical monastery on the island – Timios Stavros Monastery

One of the oldest and most historical monasteries on the island of Cyprus, Timios Stavros Monastery, is a landmark for the village of Omodos. Built in the heart of the village, it stands with magnitude and forms an important part of Cyprus’s cultural heritage.

Tradition states that the Monastery was founded before the arrival of Agia Eleni in Cyprus in 357 B.C., but there is no exact date.

Its unique architecture is characteristic, a large two-storey building in the shape of a “π”, which surrounds the church from the north, south and west. The golden carved iconostasis of the church, which was made in 1817, with its Holy Cross case and ancient icons is of major importance to the church.
